Background of the Study:
Rape culture refers to a society or environment in which sexual violence is normalized, excused, or minimized, often through widespread attitudes, behaviors, and policies that condone or trivialize such violence. In many parts of Nigeria, including Jos South, Plateau State, rape culture has perpetuated gender inequality and violations of women's human rights. This phenomenon often leads to the stigmatization of survivors, underreporting of crimes, and a lack of adequate support systems for victims. Women and girls in Jos South, like in many parts of Nigeria, continue to suffer from violence and discrimination, often in silence, due to the deeply ingrained rape culture that exists within communities.
This study will explore the relationship between rape culture and women’s rights, focusing on how societal attitudes toward sexual violence affect women’s access to justice, healthcare, and social services. It will also assess the broader implications of rape culture for gender equality, considering factors such as legal responses, public awareness, and the availability of support systems for survivors in Jos South.
Statement of the Problem:
Rape culture in Jos South has led to a systematic disregard for women’s rights, particularly in areas of access to justice, healthcare, and protection from violence. Survivors often face discrimination, inadequate legal protections, and a lack of social support. This study seeks to assess the impact of rape culture on the human rights of women in Jos South and suggest approaches to combatting these issues.
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the prevalence and societal attitudes toward rape culture in Jos South, Plateau State.
To assess the impact of rape culture on women's access to justice, healthcare, and protection from violence.
To recommend interventions to reduce rape culture and improve the protection of women's rights in Jos South.
Research Questions:
What are the dominant societal attitudes toward rape and sexual violence in Jos South?
How does rape culture affect women’s access to justice and support services in Jos South?
What measures can be taken to challenge and reduce rape culture in Jos South?
Research Hypotheses:
Rape culture in Jos South has led to significant violations of women’s human rights, particularly in access to justice and healthcare.
Societal attitudes that normalize rape contribute to a lack of accountability and justice for survivors in Jos South.
Interventions aimed at changing societal attitudes toward rape culture can improve the protection of women’s rights in Jos South.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study will focus on women in Jos South, Plateau State, examining the social, legal, and healthcare challenges they face due to rape culture. Limitations include the difficulty in gathering data from survivors and potential reluctance from individuals to openly discuss rape-related issues.
